Organizations, Resistance, and Democracy: How Civil Society Organizations Impact Democratization

Abstract When are episodes of resistance likely to lead democratization? We argue that the participation durable organizations rooted in quotidian relationships not themselves designed compete for political power (what we call “quotidian civil society organizations,” QCSOs) drives successful democratic transitions. QCSOs more have stable preferences democracy and mobilization structures create greater accountability new elites during transitions thus make shifts compared movements dominated by other organization types, such as parties. Quantitative tests using novel data on composition Africa from 1990 2015 support these arguments. Older those independent opposition parties state also appear be most engender democratization.
